The Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AAT Sri Lanka) was established in December 1987, on the initiative of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka), in accordance with the guidelines issued by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and based on the model of the Association of Accounting Technicians of UK.

AAT Sri Lanka was established to produce accounting and auditing professionals at the middle level for government departments, state corporations, audit firms, industrial organizations and commercial establishments.

At present, AAT Sri Lanka is the second-largest Accounting Technicians body in the world, with over 5000 active members, over 33,000 Passed Finalists and with a 30,000-strong active student base as at 2017 (December). Along with the increasing requirements for professional knowledge to work in organizations in an ever-expanding economy and the ever-growing acceptance of the modern ‘Global Village’ concept, there is a great demand for Accountants with the AAT qualification in the job market.

Accounting Professionals fall in to the category of Middle Level Professional Accountants upon obtaining Membership (MAAT). However, by gaining experience in the field of accountancy, Middle Level Accountants are capable of reaching the level of Senior Accounting Technicians (SAT) and Fellow Members (FMAAT).
